[INTERVIEW] Sup de Luxe: interview with the school’s new and former directors

Last November, it was announced that Thibaut de La Rivière and Marta Marcheva would be taking over as Executive Directors of Sup de Luxe. We invite you to join us for a cross-examination of these two personalities, with their rich backgrounds, on the specifics of the pioneering training for the luxury professions that this school has been, and still is.


Thibaut de La Rivière holds a doctorate in intellectual property law, a doctorate in the economics of cultural institutions and a master’s degree in art history. He has devoted his professional life to the transmission of knowledge, particularly in the luxury and art sectors.


Since 1980, he has been founder and director of a number of schools, including the Institut Supérieur de Marketing du Luxe, Chaire Cartier, which he co-founded with Alain Dominique Perrin and Michel Guten in 1990. He remains President of the latter today.


Thibaut de La Rivière is also a Commandeur dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.


Marta Marcheva holds a doctorate in Communication Sciences from the Institut Français de Presse at the Université Panthéon Assas Paris 2, and has focused her academic career, research and teaching on the fields of fashion and luxury. With a dual academic and professional background, she has worked in the luxury beauty sector in France and abroad. Her academic career began at IESEG in 2009. She then joined EFAP in 2019, where she became Director of the Masters programs specializing in Luxury and Fashion.


What makes Sup de Luxe so unique?


Thibaut de La Rivière: “Sup de Luxe is unique and will remain so! The school was conceived and founded in 1990 by industry leaders, in particular Michel Guten and Alain-Dominique Perrin, managers at Cartier, to meet their need to recruit young talent. 1990 was the year of all revolutions in a sector that was still somewhat dusty. The world was opening up to more accessible, international luxury for the new global bourgeoisie.

The vision of these men for the development of the personal sector was unique and influential, for it anticipated an increase in the sector’s sales from 60 billion to almost 400 billion euros today, and the conquest of a strong international market. A successful challenge!

For 34 years, Sup de Luxe has responded perfectly and strongly to the deployment needs of brands and Houses. It remains the only training program to have been founded and overseen to this day by managers in the sector.”


Marta Marcheva: “I was delighted a few months ago to join the Institut Supérieur du Marketing de luxe, which for 34 years has been a key institution for both the luxury industry and the training of its executives.
