For the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2022, the 15 finalists are exhibiting their work at SeMoCa, the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, until July 30.

Established in 2016 by the artistic director of the Spanish luxury ready-to-wear label Jonathan Anderson, the fifth edition of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize pays tribute to traditional know-how from around the world, reinvented contemporarily.

This year’s event differs from previous editions. Opening in late 2021, the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize has moved to the Museum of Craft Art in Seoul, the capital of South Korea; where the fifteen works of the finalists – and the winner – are on display.

I love the energy of this city, which is messier and much more fun than you might think. The region places a lot of importance on preserving and protecting its traditional skills, which is one of the reasons I wanted the award to be held here,” Anderson said five years ago about the capital of the Land of the Morning.

The Seoul Museum of Craft Art (SeMoCa) was conceived as a way to showcase Korean craftsmanship internationally and is the first of its kind in South Korea. And among the 3100 applications from 116 different countries received for this edition, six of the thirty artists selected are Korean, a “perfect coincidence” for Jonathan Anderson.

It’s a perfect coincidence. Korean craftsmanship is characterized both by a great rigor and by a certain flexibility, a looseness of the hand that is particularly noticeable in ceramics, and that I appreciate very much,” he continues.

What about the finalists?

The jury in charge of naming the finalists and the winner was composed of 13 designers, architects and curators and is chaired each year by Jonathan Anderson. The jury also included Olivier Gabet, director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and Enrique Loewe, honorary president of the Loewe Foundation, among others.

The latter selected thirty artists whose works best represented excellence, artistic value and innovation in modern craftsmanship.

Announced on June 30, Korean artist Dahye Jeong was awarded the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2022. Her work, A Time of Sincerity, honors an ancient Korean craft tradition.

Having studied sculpture and then textiles at Korea Traditional Culture University, his winning work was made of horsehair. The craft tradition that Dahye Jeong used to make this basket was originally used to make hats 500 years ago. With this victory, the winner will receive 50,000 euros.

The jury praised Jeong’s efforts to bring tradition to the contemporary era, as well as the delicate perfection, transparency, and lightness of the work. “Looking at this piece, I was captivated by the magic that emanates from his work, the lightness, the light, the movement. Dahye Jeong has brought a different dimension to this age-old skill,” comments Patricia Urquiola.

Among the selected artists are also the Spanish Trinidad Contreras, the Brazilian Domingo Tótora and the Swedish Fredrik Nielsen, glassblower for 24 years and who naturally exhibits at this fifth edition You’re Not the Only One, a work made from glass.

The jury also decided to award two special mentions. One for Andile Dyalvane for her work Cornish Wall, a red clay vessel that pays tribute to the Xhosa culture and the Cornish coastline. German artist Julia Obermaier also received a special mention for her work entitled Verborgen, redefining the way jewelry is constructed by treating gemstones as structure.
