Wine-Searcher, a New Zealand website, has compiled a list of the most expensive wines in the world. It is the largest search engine dedicated to the wine industry, bringing together prices, wine merchants’ catalogues, producers and auctioneers.

The reference site for more than 13 million bottles of wine from all over the world establishes each year its ranking of the most expensive wines, all vintages included. To create this ranking, the site explains that it takes into account “a snapshot of prices at the beginning of each month. And it is this average price that we use for our list of the most expensive bottles in the world. We also require that the wines have a certain number of vintages available for sale and are available from a reasonable number of retailers.”

France tops the 2021 list with Burgundy wines produced in small quantities and therefore more expensive.

It is the wine of Domaine Leroy that takes first place with the Musigny Grand Cru, sold for €27,813. For the record, the creation of Domaine Leroy, on the fringes of the Maison Leroy, took place in 1988, under the impetus of Lalou Bize-Leroy and Takashimaya (their Japanese distributor). The latter acquired a stake in the company that year and accelerated the acquisition of vines for Domaine Leroy.

Lalou, a great taster and a demanding woman, carefully selected the vines that would become part of the Domaine. She bought the Charles Noellat and Philippe Rémy estates, among others, to form a vineyard of almost 22 hectares. She was one of the first at that time to impose biodynamic farming methods.

In second place is Domaine de la Romanée Conti, which has long been the most prized wine in Burgundy. Only a few thousand bottles are produced each year, which can be found on the most prestigious tables of starred restaurants. Purchase price: €18,851.

For many years, the estate was co-managed by a member of the Leroy family and a member of the De Villaine family, the heirs of Jacques-Marie Duvault. Today, Perrine Fenal, the daughter of Lalou Bize-Leroy, co-manages the estate with Aubert de Villaine.

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has eight great Burgundy wines. These wines are very rare and highly sought after by thousands of wine lovers around the world. The vines are cultivated with great precision and respect for the environment, and have always been.

Third place went to Auvenay Chevalier-Montrachet with a price tag of €17,446. Lalou Bize-Leroy remains the sole owner of this small estate with 3.9 hectares and 8000 bottles per year.

The ranking is completed by Henri Jayer, another Burgundy wine, at €14,275, followed by a German wine straight from the Saar Valley (€13,636): Egon Müller Scharzhofberger. In 6th place among the most expensive wines in the world, we find Georges & Christophe Roumier Musigny at €13,217, once again from Burgundy. The next most expensive wines are also from the central-eastern region: Leflaive Montrachet (€10,927) and Leroy Chambertin (€10,664). And finally, the last two are fairly close in price, with the Jean-Louis Chave Ermitage cuvée Cathelin (from the Rhone) selling for €7,749 and the Romanée-Conti Montrachet, a Burgundy wine as usual, making your palate yearn for €7,719.
