The former artistic director of Valentino will succeed Demna as creative director at Balenciaga. His talent as a couturier and his inclusive but more mature vision of fashion should breathe new life into the Kering-owned fashion house.
Balenciaga is set to take on a new look under the scissors of Pierpaolo Piccioli.
The Italian designer, who worked for 25 years at Valentino (also based in Rome), is known for his bold use of bright, monochrome colors and large volumes that never fail to turn heads.
Kering is hoping to succeed in its gamble by calling on him to recreate a positive buzz around Balenciaga. The fashion house had been in the spotlight under the creative leadership of Demna, known for his strong and disruptive designs, who left last March to join Gucci.
Rumors confirmed
The appointment of Pierpaolo Piccioli, officially effective July 10 (but with an earlier start date, according to the fashion press), has been confirmed by a statement from Kering and Balenciaga. The news had already been circulating insistently in the fashion world in the form of rumors.
