Between the Louis Vuitton Foundation and Lafayette Anticipations, via the Bourse de Commerce, the City of Light is once again shining on the world contemporary art scene.

For the past two years and despite the crisis linked to Covid-19, international galleries have been multiplying in Paris, numbering 10, several of which are of American and Anglo-Saxon origin. This return to the forefront has been made possible by the opening of new contemporary art venues, as mentioned above.

Paris is more attractive than ever to collectors and art world players,” commented the senior director of the Parisian gallery Zwirner, Justine Durrett.

A new era begins between Paris and contemporary art

In the 1950s, Paris had gradually lost its aura within the contemporary and modern world, but “is once again becoming an extremely strong place in the cartography of contemporary and modern art” , underlines the international gallery owner, Kamel Mennour. Parisian galleries are becoming more and more dynamic and visible internationally than they were two years ago, particularly thanks to the impetus given by the Brexit. Many players in the contemporary art scene have decided to leave the British capital to set up shop in France.

In addition to a “strong programme” , Justine Durrett also mentions a “unique dialogue between historical and contemporary creation, not only in art but also in fashion, gastronomy, luxury, and the art of living in general” , making Paris’ strength in this market.

Contemporary art and its Parisian addresses

For contemporary art lovers, many venues are currently hosting contemporary exhibitions.

Inaugurated last May, the Bourse de Commerce is currently home to the private art collection of French businessman François Pinault, but also, until June, a retrospective in honour of the contemporary American sculptor Charles Ray, in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou. The double exhibition will be in dialogue with the artist’s 123 sculptures created throughout his life.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton is the second most important venue for contemporary art in Paris.

Until April 3rd, 2022, “The Morozov Collection. Icons of Modern Art” takes place within the walls of the Foundation. The eventful exhibition brings together more than 200 masterpieces of modern French and Russian art by the Moscow brothers Mikhail and Ivan Abramovich Morozov. Works by Gauguin, Manet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Repine and Korovine will be on display.

Through its exhibitions, the Foundation is committed to promoting modern and contemporary artistic creation and contributes to its influence both nationally and internationally,” says the Foundation.

Finally, the Lafayette Anticipations Foundation will present an exhibition dedicated to the Chinese artist Xinyi Cheng, “Seen Through Others”, from 23rd March to 28th May 2022. Unveiling some thirty of her works, the contemporary artist wanted to unveil “the complexity of emotions, desires and relationships that permeate contemporary life” to express “the intensity of feelings, reveries and presences that make up our daily experience of the world” and invites visitors to question themselves on the complexity of emotions, desires and relationships that permeate contemporary life.

In the eyes of Americans, Chinese or Germans, Paris is extremely well off and desirable, it is The place to be“, insists Kamel Mennour.

This is all the more visible since the world director of Art Basel, Marc Spiegler, has decided to locate the very famous international contemporary art gallery Art Basel in the Grand Palais in Paris.

With its unparalleled history and contemporary dynamism, Paris is uniquely positioned as a central epicentre of the international cultural scene. We aim to build on Paris’ unrivalled position as a global metropolis to help create a dynamic week that further amplifies the city’s international resonance as a cultural capital,” he says.

Finally, on the market side, while France remains fourth in the world behind the UK, China and the US with only 7% of the total cumulative sales, “the 2021 results show a real renewed focus on Parisian activity“, says Christie’s Paris auction house. With a total of €409 million, including €78.8 million for contemporary art (€65.5 million in 2020), it posted its second best result in 20 years, with 316 new customers (123 in 2020) and bidders from 63 countries (49 in 2020).
