The G7 leaders are meeting this year at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia, in the Italian region of Puglia. The summit is an opportunity for Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, to reinforce her international stature. Discussions will focus on crucial issues such as aid to Ukraine, the boycott of Russian diamonds and trade relations with China.
Italy is hosting this year’s annual G7 summit, which opened today, June 13, and runs until June 15. For Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, the summit is an opportunity to reinforce her international credibility.
“I’m proud that our nation is presenting itself at the G7 and in Europe as the strongest government of all,” she declared. “This is something that has never happened in the past and is happening today. It’s a satisfaction, but also a great responsibility.”
Giorgia Meloni can rejoice all the more. Last weekend, her Fratelli d’Italia party enjoyed great success in the European elections. The situation is less favorable for Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The French president dissolved the National Assembly and called early elections following the victory of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella’s Rassemblement National, while Olaf Scholz has seen his party surpassed by the AfD, recently excluded from the ID group in the European Parliament.
This year, the G7 members are meeting in a tense international context, marked in particular by the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Discussions will cover such burning issues as immigration, the situation in Ukraine, the place of the African continent on the international stage, climate change, and trade relations with China.
