Balmain has just found a successor to Olivier Rousteing as its creative director. The new appointee is Antonin Tron, founder of the independent Parisian fashion house Atlein and former Saint Laurent designer. This choice contrasts with the ultra-media-savvy and digitally native former designer.
After quiet luxury, could this be the era of quiet hiring?
Many major fashion houses have recently opted for profiles that are more low-key than media-savvy, such as Matthieu Blazy at Chanel.
Balmain is jumping on the bandwagon with the appointment of Antonin Tron on Wednesday, November 12. He will be tasked with the challenge of replacing the highly media-savvy Olivier Rousteing, who in the space of 14 years has become almost inseparable from the Balmain brand.
Coming from Saint Laurent and unknown to the general public, Antonin Tron is a 41-year-old French designer who has nevertheless honed his skills with big names in luxury such as Louis Vuitton and Givenchy, accumulating no less than 17 years of experience in the sector.
While he is expected to take up his new position this month, his first collection for Balmain is expected for Fall/Winter 2026-27 during Paris Fashion Week.
A former fashion entrepreneur
Born in Paris in 1984, Antonin Tron graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 2008. His classmates included none other than the current creative director of Gucci, Demna (Gvasalia), and Glenn Martens, currently at Maison Margiela. Returning to Paris after graduation, he spent seventeen years working in the fashion industry.
After making his debut at Louis Vuitton Homme, he worked on the women’s collections at Givenchy and Balenciaga, where he collaborated successively with Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander Wang, and Demna. More recently, he worked for Saint Laurent.
Balmain’s new creative director is also known for creating his own brand, Atlein, in 2016. This independent fashion house is characterized by a distinctive style, featuring sculptural draping, sensual dresses, and a more structured wardrobe offering sophisticated tailoring and outerwear. Since its launch, it has won numerous awards.
Antonin Tron won the First Collections Prize at the 2018 ANDAM Awards. This award enabled him to attract prestigious distributors such as Bergdorf Goodman in New York, Ikram in Chicago, The Webster in Miami, Galeries Lafayette in Paris, Boon the Shop in Seoul, and the luxury e-commerce platform Net-a-porter. He has also worked with Kylie Jenner on Khy, her affordable brand.
In the future, Antonin Tron will devote himself exclusively to Balmain.
A new lease of life for the fashion house
With this surprise appointment, the owner of Balmain, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund Mayhoola for Investment Ltd., intends to open a new chapter after the Olivier Rousteing era, which was characterized by exceptional longevity for the sector (14 years).
The former occupant of the premises, like Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, had occupied the space to such an extent that he had become as important as, if not more important than, the Balmain brand.
Furthermore, although Olivier Rousteing’s creations had been critically and commercially successful, sales had recently declined. Antonin Tron is therefore particularly anticipated for his ability to give new impetus to the House, which relaunched last year in the high-end perfume segment with the support of Estée Lauder as licensee.
