With an increase of 17.3%, the CAC 40 recorded its best half-year performance since 2009, buoyed by the luxury giants and the recovery of cyclical stocks. In light of the latest data, which French groups have seen the strongest growth in 2021?

The first half of 2021 was marked by the economic recovery of the main global indices. The CAC 40 posted its strongest half-yearly growth with a 17.4% jump over the period, a peak not seen since the second half of 2009.

Of the 40 stocks in the CAC 40, only 7 declined in the first half of 2021, and only one experienced a double-digit decline: Atos. The French digital services company recorded the largest decline over this period (-31.4%), due to reservations expressed by Deloitte and Grant Thornton about some of its US subsidiaries.

Other stocks that fell the most were Alstom and the electricity supplier Engie, down 8.5% and 7.7% respectively. Bouygues, Renault, Orange and Worldline were also in the red and ended the half year slightly down.

While the declines are minimal for these companies, the jumps in the top of the CAC 40 are more significant. Among the 40 stocks, 27 have posted double-digit growth in the first half of 2021.

The biggest gainer in the first half of the year was Saint-Gobain with a 47.6% jump, closely followed by Société Générale with a 46% increase. Cyclical stocks, largely paralyzed since the beginning of the health crisis, now see a strong recovery.

Luxury goods, still at the top

Apart from the cyclical stocks, the big winners of the CAC 40 are the luxury groups. Nicknamed the “KOHLs”, for Kering, L’Oréal, Hermès and LVMH, the luxury giants have all experienced strong growth this half-year.

Leading the way is Hermès, which grew 39.7% in the first half of 2021. Behind him are the country’s two largest market capitalizations, LVMH and L’Oreal, which gained 29.4% and 20.9% respectively. The Kering group (Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga) has climbed 24%.
