Prada se lance dans l’industrie spatiale en habillant les astronautes

Prada is entering the space industry by outfitting NASA astronauts

On Sunday, June 7, the Italian luxury brand Prada and aerospace specialist Axiom Space unveiled a spacesuit designed for the crew of the Artemis IV mission, which is scheduled to launch in early 2028.

NASA is dressing in Prada. Aerospace specialist Axiom Space revealed a spacesuit designed in collaboration with the Italian luxury brand Prada. It will be worn by NASA astronauts during the Artemis IV mission, scheduled to launch in early 2028.

The Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG) will protect scientists from the elements as they explore the Moon.

To this end, the suit incorporates a combination of high-tech materials using advanced 3D modeling techniques that ensure cooling and ventilation while enhancing comfort during extravehicular activities that can last up to eight hours.

Specifically, the ventilation system in this equipment operates via a network of tubes that delivers oxygen to the astronaut’s face while continuously removing carbon dioxide. The gas is then sent to a CO₂ filter, which allows the air to be refreshed. “It manages the astronauts’ thermal environment and supports their breathing, all while they push the limits of their bodies,” said Russell Ralston, vice president of development at Axiom Space.

A past collaboration

The unveiling of this new garment comes more than a year after Prada and Axiom Space unveiled the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) suit at the International Astronautical Congress held in Milan in October 2024. The LCVG is, in fact, designed to be worn underneath the AxEMU.

“When we unveiled the AxEMU, we announced that the collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space would continue beyond this first step,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Head of Marketing and CSR Strategy at Prada. “Today, we are proud to present a new achievement resulting from the unique partnership between Axiom Space’s pioneering expertise and Prada’s know-how in design, patternmaking, and cutting-edge materials, as we approach the return of humans to the Moon,” he continued.

Following NASA’s announcement that it would revise the timeline for its Artemis program, the Artemis IV mission is scheduled to land on the Moon in early 2028 to explore its southern surface. Humans will thus set foot on the Moon again, 59 years after the Apollo 11 astronauts.
