The city of Cannes has decided to auction off eleven of the city’s iconic locations on June 21, in partnership with the auction house Artcurial. Cannes is the first city to organize such a sale of its heritage.

The city council has called on Pertimm, a company specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning, to digitize and sell as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) several sites in this emblematic city of the French Riviera, some of which are world famous. The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, the Croisette, the Vieux Port, the Ile Sainte Marguerite and its Fort Royal, the Pointe Croisette with the Palm Beach, the Malmaison, the Suquet, the Ecomusée sous-marin, the Marché Forville and finally the Port Canto will all be digitized as part of this sale.

An eleventh place, the Georges-Méliès Campus, is also among the places that will be transformed into NFT but will be offered by lottery to a Cannes resident who will leave with a right of possession estimated at 10 000 euros.

The French auction house Artcurial will orchestrate the auction on June 21 at the Port Canto Master’s Office. The future owners will leave with a unique and secure USB key on which will be stored the certificate of ownership, a 3D model and the power to integrate its acquisition in one of the two authorized metaverse: Decentraland or Sandbox. On its side, the company Pertimm will take care of the good reputation of the virtual sites.

Nevertheless, Cannes will be the first city to enter into the virtual world, and its city hall justified this decision by explaining that it wished to increase its attractiveness and visibility throughout the world and beyond.

The latter has also specified that 10% of the profits generated by the sale will be donated to the Cannes endowment fund, to be then donated to various Cannes associations, acting for the realization of environmental actions in the city.

For those interested, you can follow this sale on site or remotely via Internet and payments will be made in euros.
