Owned by LVMH, the world’s leading luxury wine and spirits division Moët Hennessy has acquired the American winery Joseph Phelps, one of the most renowned properties in California’s Napa Valley.

Considered one of the pioneers of the famous Napa Valley wine region, the visionary Joseph Phelps has established himself as one of the great names in American wine since the 1970s. The creator of numerous award-winning vintages, Joseph Phelps Vineyards consists of 200 hectares of vineyards spread over eleven vineyards in Napa Valley, as well as 30 hectares spread over two vineyards in Sonoma Valley.

Phelps is synonymous with high-quality California winemaking, and Moët Hennessy explained that this acquisition is part of a precise development strategy: “The ambition is to offer its increasingly demanding consumers and distribution partners a portfolio of prestigious wines and spirits that is always exciting, by adding Houses with particularly strong values of excellence, craftsmanship and heritage,” said the group.

In addition, Philippe Schaus, Chairman and CEO of Moët Hennessy, said that the group wants to preserve and continue the legacy established by Joseph Phelps and his descendants: “With the combination of the wonderful vineyards, the unparalleled experience, and the excellence of the Joseph Phelps, […] we will continue the wonderful journey initiated by the founder fifty years ago and continued by his heirs today. […] We will continue to develop this new House in keeping with the legacy and vision of the founder.

He then emphasized that Moët Hennessy also intends to maintain the values of quality, know-how and entrepreneurship of the vineyard, while placing them alongside a goal of sustainability.

Commenting on the acquisition, the Phelps family said, “As a Napa Valley pioneer to a critically acclaimed and internationally recognized producer of iconic wines, […] we believe that passing the care of this jewel in the crown of the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast to Moët Hennessy will build on our family’s legacy long into the future. In our discussions with Moët Hennessy, it was very clear that they value and embrace all of our bright and dedicated team members and, more importantly, are committed to ensuring that our mission and founding values remain at the heart of Joseph Phelps Vineyards.”
