Marriott International has signed an agreement with Mario Julen to open the first Ritz-Carlton Hotel located in a ski resort in Europe. It will be the second Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Switzerland, joining the Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix in Geneva. It is scheduled to open in 2026.

The hotel was designed by the Parisian firm AW² led by partner architects Reda Amalou and Stéphanie Ledoux. The Ritz-Carlton Zermatt promises to offer a high-end architectural and interior design inspired by the classic mountain chalet. It will also offer breathtaking views from the rooms and restaurants over the Matterhorn, one of the highest mountain ranges in the world.

We are delighted to announce this signature with Mario Julen who has a fantastic vision for the project“, said Satya Anand, President of Marriott International Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Zermatt is synonymous with skiing, mountaineering and breathtaking scenery”.

As the epitome of modern luxury, this historic development and stunning destination will enrich our portfolio of iconic Ritz-Carlton properties around the world, offering guests an exciting opportunity to experience Zermatt’s snow-capped peaks all year round, the world-class ski slopes emblematic of the Matterhorn mountain. Today’s signature reflects the increased demand for our luxury hospitality brands in Europe, the Middle East and Africa”

In a picturesque setting with a breathtaking view of the Matterhorn, this 69-room complex will combine elegance with an excellent level of service. It is expected to benefit from two restaurants and two bars, as well as a private dining room and an outdoor terrace for outdoor dining.

Additional facilities are likely to include a luxury spa, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and meeting and event rooms. The hotel also plans to offer ski access at the foot of the slopes for added convenience.

As a destination, Zermatt welcomes skiers of all levels and has easy access to Cervinia in Italy, which offers off-piste heli-skiing and glacier skiing during the summer months.

This is a moving project for me because I have been working passionately for many years to make it happen“, said Mario Julien. “This is not only a declaration of love to my hometown of Zermatt, but also to the luxury hotel business and its ability to inspire travel. As the first major international brand in Zermatt, my wish is that this project will bring a new level of hospitality to the Swiss Alps“.

Travelers can reach Zermatt from the international airports of Geneva and Zurich by private helicopter or train in less than four hours.
