The Mandarin Oriental hotel group is strengthening its presence in the city of London with a second address in the very chic Mayfair district. Already established in the upmarket Knightsbridge area with the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, the group will open its new establishment at the end of the year.

The hotel will house 50 rooms and 78 private flats, all in an atmosphere inspired by the chic English clubs. The atmosphere of the new hotel will be “more discreet, uncluttered and intimate than the group’s other London hotel”, says Susanne Hatje, who has left Mandarin Oriental New York to become General Manager of the new address.

“We are looking forward to introducing this new Mandarin Oriental address in the heart of such an iconic area. Mayfair has long been a popular destination for luxury, fashion and art lovers, a place of constant change. All of this richness is aptly echoed in our new property, which will cultivate the same charm for which Mandarin Oriental is renowned, but in a more intimate and relaxed setting. A warm atmosphere, inspired by the clubs of English society, will be distilled throughout the hotel’s various spaces and we hope to make Mandarin Oriental Mayfair a new and popular destination in this part of the city,” reveals Susanne Hatje.

The architecture of the hotel has been designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, who have already designed the famous Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Cheesegrater Tower in London. The interior design will be created by the Tokyo-based studio Curiosity, whose inspiration is the concept of a “nature and art centre”. The British agency Studio Indigo has been commissioned to add the “British” touch while maintaining the identity of the Mandarin Oriental hotels.

The Mandarin Oriental Mayfair will be the UK debut of Korean-born, Colorado-raised, Michelin-starred chef Akira Back. Chef Akira Back instils a passion for delivering a unique experience that emotionally connects his guests to his personality and life. The chef offers a unique and modern Japanese cuisine combined with other cultures from around the world, inspired by his travels.

The hotel’s spa will offer guests an oasis of calm in the heart of Mayfair, where tranquillity, serenity and wellbeing are the priorities. The spa will feature a 25-metre pool, sauna, balneotherapy pool and relaxation area.

Today, the Mandarin Oriental hotel group operates 36 hotels and 7 residences in 24 countries and territories.
