Mandarin Oriental Hotel sets up in Egypt

Renaissance on the Nile. The historic Shepheard Hotel in Cairo, inaugurated in 1841, is to reopen thanks to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel group, associated with the holding company of the Saudi group Al-Sharif. This will be its first location in Egypt.

The luxury hotel, located on the banks of the Nile in the city centre of the megalopolis, will open in 2024.

Until then, French interior designer Sybille de Margerie will work on its renovation, with the responsibility of preserving the building’s heritage, while improving its facilities and services.

“We are delighted to extend Mandarin Oriental’s renowned hospitality to Egypt and to work with the Sharif Group Holding Company to bring this iconic and historic hotel back to life. The project presents an ideal opportunity to grow our brand in the Middle East and Africa. We look forward to creating unique experiences for our guests,” said James Riley, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental.

To immerse yourself in the atmosphere of an Agatha Christie novel (minus the murders…), simply book one of its future 188 rooms and 88 suites – many of which will have balconies with views of the city, the river or Gezira Island.

The Mandarin Oriental Shepheard will also feature five restaurants and bars, as well as a Club Lounge and various rooms. A ballroom will be located on the roof, as will one of the restaurants.

Visitors will be able to relax in one of the eight cabins of a Spa, in the swimming pool, also perched on the roof, in the fitness centre or in the Beauty Salon. Children will be able to go to the children’s club.

The Mandarin Hotel Group currently has 36 hotels and seven residences in 24 countries and territories. Among its latest additions are the Mandarin Oriental in Shenzhen, China, and the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey. It is also aiming to open a new resort in 2025, which will be located in a cluster of private islands in the Maldives.
