LVMH : Nigo appointed new artistic director of Kenzo

The news came down this Wednesday morning, LVMH has just announced the appointment of Japanese designer Nigo as artistic director of the House of Kenzo.

“I am very pleased to welcome Nigo as Artistic Director of Kenzo. The arrival of an extremely talented Japanese designer will allow us to write a new page in the history of the House that Takada Kenzo founded. I am convinced that Nigo’s creativity and innovation, as well as his commitment to the House’s history, will allow us to fully express the potential of Kenzo,” said Sidney Toledano, Chairman and CEO of LVMH Fashion Group.

Nigo will replace Portuguese designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista, who stepped down as Creative Director in June. Nigo will take up his position as head of Kenzo on 20 September.

“I am proud to have been appointed Artistic Director of Kenzo. I was born the year Takada Kenzo san opened its first shop in Paris. We both graduated from the same fashion school in Tokyo. (…) Bringing the spirit of Takada Kenzo san’s know-how to life to create a new Kenzo is the greatest challenge of my 30-year career, a challenge I intend to take up with the Kenzo teams,” Nigo was quoted as saying in the release.

Nigo already has almost 30 years of experience in the industry. The Japanese designer is known for his taste in streetwear and launched his first clothing brand in Tokyo in 1993. He also collaborates with the biggest designers, as in 2020, when he made a capsule collection with Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton.
