Like Louis Vuitton and Chanel a few days earlier, the Italian fashion house Gucci unveiled “Cosmogonie”: its 2023 Cruise Collection, in the heart of Castel del Monte, Italy.

The label’s artistic director, Alessandro Michele, continues to interact with unique and historic places around the world. This time he set foot in Gucci‘s native country – his own as well – to show his 2023 Cruise collection. “Cosmogonie” was brought to life in a XIIIth Century castle in the Italian region of Puglia, south of the boot.

The collection? An ode to Walter Benjamin

The term ‘Cosmogonie” refers to theories about the creation of the world, the cosmos and the universe. Alessandro Michele has therefore played with this word to make it the main theme of this collection.

But its meaning is deeper than that. Through this fashion show, Michele wanted to pay homage to the German Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin and to the woman who was his friend and who paid tribute to him after his death in an essay in 1968: Hannah Arendt. A collector of quotations, Benjamin is painted by Arendt as a “diver of precious pearls”.

In the creative director’s latest collection for the House, he is inspired by the pearl diver’s ability to “illuminate connections, which would otherwise be invisible”. “If any thinker was able to keep together things that were so distant in time and space, rearticulating them into bursting constellations, it was Walter Benjamin. To this man, who couldn’t survive without his quotations, my gratitude” Alessandro Michele finally said in a statement.

Far from being a futile theory or a simple theme of a fashion collection, the Cosmogonie reflects the identity of the Gucci 2023 Cruise Collection and is the anchor of Benjamin’s philosophy, which was reborn thanks to Michele.

It is no coincidence that Michele chose May 16, 2022, to present his collection. It was the day when a total lunar eclipse was observed, when the full moon was dressed in an exceptional brown color. It is also worth noting that Michele “gave” or rather, had a star adopted by all the guests present at this fashion show. We can mention Dakota Johnson, Elle Fanning, Måneskin or Lana Del Rey, the main friends – among others – of the house.

Regarding the pieces presented, they were all as singular as sparkling, between glamour and eccentricity. From ruffles to gladiator shoes, not to mention the beaded necklaces featured, the colorful creations of the Gucci Cruise 2023 collection embodied a fusion of French and Italian styles, rethought by Michele.
