Arctic Ice, a Greenland-based start-up, is exporting ancient ice to the luxury bars of Dubai. It promises a unique drinking experience with ice extracted from glaciers preserved for over 100,000 years. However, this innovative initiative is proving controversial, attracting criticism and even death threats.
Greenland, famous for its glacial landscapes, becomes the unlikely supplier of vintage ice for Dubai’s luxury bars! Start-up Arctic Ice, founded by Malik V Rasmussen, harvests ice from the fjords of Greenland. British media outlet The Guardian reported on January 9 that it had just exported its first ice cubes.
This ancient ice, nicknamed “black ice” locally, paradoxically because of its transparency, is carefully extracted to guarantee its purity. Once collected, it is transported to Denmark in refrigerated containers, then shipped to Dubai.
“Arctic Ice comes directly from natural Arctic glaciers that have remained frozen for over 100,000 years,” says the company’s website. “These parts of the ice caps have not been in contact with soil or contaminated by pollutants produced by human activities. This makes Arctic Ice the cleanest H20 on Earth.”
Sophisticated logistics
Arctic Ice has a specialized boat with a crane and operates in the Nuup Kangerlua, the fjord around Greenland’s capital, Nuuk. The boat searches for pure, hard-to-find ice – the famous black ice.
