Last Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed South African billionaire Elon Musk, before lunching with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed ben Salmane. Discussions aimed at promoting French industry on the one hand, and deepening diplomatic relations and the Franco-Saudi alliance on the other.

Summit meetings at the Élysée Palace. At the end of last week, French President Emmanuel Macron received in succession billionaire Elon Musk and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed ben Salmane. Two personalities as powerful as they are controversial.

Late last Friday morning, Emmanuel Macron first received the whimsical boss of Tesla, Twitter and SpaceX at the Elysée Palace. The latter was also invited to Paris to the Vivatech trade show, dedicated to technological innovation and start-ups, to hold a conference on artificial intelligence and electric cars. The event included an interview with Maurice Lévy, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Publicis and founder of Europe’s largest event dedicated to new technologies.

At midday, the South-African businessman held talks with the French President, before leaving without making any statement. However, we can only guess at the topics the two men discussed, a few weeks after his visit to Versailles for the “Choose France” trade show. Emmanuel Macron is hoping to bring Tesla battery factories back to France, while stealing priority from Spain, which is also positioning itself in this niche. The head of state also had to ask Elon Musk to make a few efforts in his policy of moderation on the Twitter network, and to comply with forthcoming European regulations.

The day before his visit to France, Elon Musk went to Rome to meet Giorgia Meloni, the head of the Italian government. During their meeting, they discussed a number of important issues, such as the risks associated with artificial intelligence and the birth rate.

Diplomatic meeting

Following this meeting, and without assuming any link between the two events, Emmanuel Macron had a working lunch with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed ben Salmane. Several major international issues were discussed, including the war in Ukraine, Iran, the Lebanese crisis and Syria.

The French President and the Saudi Prince reiterated “their shared commitment to security and stability in the Near and Middle East, and their determination to pursue their joint efforts to bring about a lasting easing of tensions”. On a bilateral level, they intend to “develop and deepen the partnership between the two countries”.

France is prepared to “support Saudi Arabia in strengthening its defense capabilities”. Emmanuel Macron reiterated “the willingness of French companies to continue supporting Saudi Arabia in implementing its ambitious Vision 2030, a vast program of reforms. He highlighted “the recognized expertise of French companies, particularly in energy transition, transport, healthcare and new technologies”.

Mohammed ben Salmane is currently on his second visit to France, the first having taken place in July 2022. On this previous visit, “MBS” was returning to Paris for the first time since the 2018 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey. This murder was attributed, notably by US intelligence services, in part to the crown prince, giving him a controversial reputation in the West.

In fact, the prince plans to extend his stay in France, where he owns several residences, including a magnificent château in Louveciennes, near Paris.
