The champagne brand has unveiled a series of limited-edition Brut 2015 bottles with labels celebrating Jean-Michel Basquiat. More specifically, his 1983 work ‘In Italian’.
Dom Pérignon’s expertise and the unrivalled art of the late Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988): that’s what the brand’s new line offers. Produced in collaboration with Jean-Michel Basquiat’s heirs, the collection comprises three Vintage 2015 bottles and boxes with a label featuring the artist’s 1983 work ‘In Italian’. Housed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, it depicts a coloured man with a green complexion topped by the phrase ‘Crown of Thorns’, crossed out by Basquiat with a black line. Various slogans are also inscribed on the neo-expressionist canvas.

Dom Pérignon’s shield-shaped labels, a signature of the artist’s, are thus adorned in yellow, blue or green, with a crown affixed above the drawings. Taken together, they represent a triptych of In Italian.
‘In Dom Pérignon’s vision, blending is a decisive element in the intensity of the aesthetic experience. The tension between the different characteristics of the wines before blending creates an extremely rich alliance of meanings, without ever erasing the trace of the original material,’ says the brand on its website.
‘At their core, Basquiat’s work and Dom Pérignon’s wines embody a shared desire to challenge the status quo and inspire through their unique visions,’ she says.
To promote its project, the brand organised a special evening at the Brant Foundation in New York’s East Village. Guests included actress and director Zoë Kravitz, model Precious Lee, actress and producer Natasha Lyonne and model and actor Evan Mock.
Collaborative art by Dom Pérignon
With this range, Dom Pérignon is once again affirming its ambition to enter the artistic sphere and open up its image to pop culture. The champagne house has already paid tribute to Andy Warhol (1928-1987), a great friend and collaborator of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and has worked on limited editions with the visual artist and sculptor Jeff Koons and the singer and actress Lady Gaga.
This collaborative strategy is also geared towards exclusivity, with very few bottles released for each launch. Enough to satisfy lovers of rare bottles and appeal to art lovers and younger generations.
