A French-Saudi businessman, he was for nearly 30 years the head of TAG (Techniques d’Avant-Garde), a company specialising in aviation and motor sports, which became TAG Heuer in 1985 when it took over the Heuer watch brand. TAG Heuer became the world’s leading manufacturer of prestige watches and chronographs, and the fourth largest luxury watch brand in the world.

When TAG Heuer was just TAG in the 1970s, it sponsored the Williams Formula One team, before becoming a shareholder in McLaren in 1984. With Ojjeh at the helm, the British team was able to record numerous victories and world titles, amassed by Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Other successes came in the late 1990s (with Mika Häkkinen) and 2000s (with Lewis Hamilton).

In addition, TAG helped finance the Porsche engine that led McLaren to victory in the Formula One World Championship in 1984, 1985 and 1986.

Having discovered a passion for Formula One through an invitation from the Saudi royal family to the Monaco Grand Prix in 1978, he remained a passionate fan of the sport for the rest of his life. Ojjeh was also instrumental in bringing in Bahraini capital to support McLaren in recent years.

Zak Brown, current McLaren boss, paid tribute to his shareholder: “We are all very saddened at McLaren. Mansour Ojjeh’s name has been associated with the soul of this team for almost 40 years and has played an important role in its success. He had the spirit of the race in him. Ultra-competitive, determined, passionate, and above all, what is perhaps his most important characteristic: fair play. No matter how intense the battle was, sportsmanship came first. He will remain a constant source of inspiration to us all” .
