Chopard: Julia Roberts, new official ambassador

Julia Roberts is the new official “ambassador” of Chopard and the face of Chopard’s Happy Sport campaign. A most surprising partnership given that the actress with the iconic smile has so far only accepted Lancôme as her company.

The campaign with the American actress includes billboards, digital, editorial and also comes in three short videos directed by Xavier Dolan and styled by Elizabeth Stewart.

One of the videos shows a behind-the-scenes look at a Chopard shoot with Roberts; another is a Q&A with her, and the third shows the actress blowing kisses and frolicking, as if mimicking the action of the five “dancing” diamonds in the watch cases.

While the campaign focuses on the Happy Sport watches, Roberts wears other pieces from Chopard’s Happy Diamonds collection, which includes the watches.

In addition, Julia Roberts will be the “godmother” of the Chopard Trophy, which is awarded to a young actor and actress each year at the Cannes Film Festival, of which Chopard has been the official partner since 1998.

It was last year, during the development of the Happy Diamonds campaign, that Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s co-president, artistic director and a member of the family that owns and runs the jeweller, told her team that they needed a beautiful ambassador with a beautiful smile. “They actually proposed 1,000 names. But I said for myself there is only one that comes to mind, Julia Roberts. She doesn’t endorse any company except Lancôme and that’s a very good thing.”

She added that Roberts had multi-generational appeal. “That’s also what I was looking for with the Happy Sport watch. It’s 28 years old and still very modern and contemporary. It’s totally timeless and Julia is timeless.”

“From the inside out, Julia is a happy person. I believe that. Many great actresses are not really happy. I know a lot of them from Cannes. When you’re always in the spotlight, or on Instagram, and always being photographed, you don’t have a very personal life. It’s not so easy to digest for everyone. Julia is a very normal person. She doesn’t post something every five minutes somewhere. She’s pretty balanced between her work, her family life and her love life diflucan 100mg. Others, like Julianne Moore, are a lot like Julia.”

Roberts’ partnership with the luxury watchmaker and jeweller is exceptional given that she doesn’t endorse any products other than those of Lancôme. On the other hand, it’s not surprising since she’s known to wear Chopard for red carpet appearances, most recently in 2019 at the Golden Globes.

“Wearing a truly exquisite piece of jewellery to an event always raises the bar. It takes the glamour factor to the next level,” Roberts told WWD.

The first time was five years ago at the Cannes Film Festival. “She was wearing a beautiful Chopard necklace with emeralds, and she was very funny,” Scheufele recalled. “She told me, ‘With this necklace, I don’t need shoes for the red carpet,’ and of course she went barefoot on the red carpet…”

“I’m a little, everything or almost nothing,” confides Julia Roberts. “If I wear a necklace, I wear five. If I wear a bracelet, I wear ten on each wrist.”

“She’s very casual, very elegantly sporty,” Scheufele said. “You often see her in flat shoes, even in the movies. She’s very classic, but not old-fashioned. She is classically modern, classically chic. Relaxed. She has the kind of spirit that I just love.”
