Balenciaga in turmoil following accusations of cultural appropriation

A piece from the new Balenciaga collection is causing a stir. The Spanish fashion house has been accused by some of its clientele of cultural appropriation by describing the sweatpants it makes as racist.

 

Customers of the brand have taken to social media to denounce Balenciaga’s sweatpants, which they say appear to imitate “sagging”, a way of wearing trousers with underwear showing. This style has been popularised in particular by black youth culture in the US.

This story has gained particular momentum as sagging has developed in prisons in the US and some cities have decided to ban it. Indeed, in 2007, the state of Louisiana banned sagging, highlighting the lack of decency and modesty that the style represents.
