It’s an announcement that has sent shockwaves through the automotive and Formula 1 worlds : Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari’s iconic former chairman, is joining the board of McLaren Group Holdings Limited, parent company of McLaren Automotive.
Luca di Montezemolo‘s decision to join McLaren seemed unthinkable just a few years ago, given the historic rivalry between Ferrari and McLaren, both on the track and on the road.
The 77-year-old Italian thus becomes the ninth member of the British carmaker’s board of directors.
A powerful symbol in an emblematic rivalry
A central figure in Ferrari’s golden era, Luca di Montezemolo joined the Scuderia in 1973 as assistant to founder Enzo Ferrari, before becoming team director in 1974, the year of Niki Lauda’s ascension. He then presided over Ferrari during Michael Schumacher’s dominance in the 2000s, before stepping down in 2014. His career is intimately linked with Ferrari’s identity, which makes his arrival at McLaren all the more spectacular.
