At the beginning of February, Alaïa recruited Pieter Mulier, the right-hand man of designer Raf Simons, as the new Creative Director with immediate effect. His first collection will be the spring-summer 2022 collection.

A man for whom fashion holds no more secrets

The Belgian designer studied design and architecture at the Saint Luke’s Higher Institute of Architecture in Brussels and then started his career in fashion by working for the men’s label Raf Simons in Antwerp. He extended his creative field to women’s fashion and accessories alongside Simons when the latter became Creative Director of Jil Sander in 2006.

He continued his role as right-hand man at Christian Dior in 2012 and at Calvin Klein from 2016 to 2018. Mulier was Creative Director and was responsible for implementing Simons’ vision of creation and design for men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, as well as the Bridge and Better clothing and accessories lines. Mulier also led all men’s and women’s design teams for the Calvin Klein brand under Simons’ leadership.

He was later one of the main characters in Frédéric Tcheng’s documentary Dior et moi, in 2015, which followed from the inside the arrival of Raf Simons at Dior and the preparation of his first haute couture fashion show. It was this documentary that almost brought him out of his discreet shadow.

His mentor later joined Prada and it was at this point that their paths parted. Mulier’s experience in the field of design and architecture led to his appointment as Creative Director at the Alaïa Couture house, where the collections start with 3D shapes rather than flat sketches.

“It is an absolute dream to join this prestigious company, its magnificent workshops and talented team. Always ahead of his time and open to all arts and cultures, Azzedine Alaïa’s vision serves as inspiration because he has always allowed himself time to innovate and create in a sustainable way. It is with this immense sense of admiration and responsibility that I will strive to continue his legacy by celebrating femininity and putting women at the heart of creation. I am looking forward to meeting the clients and friends of the house as well as the Alaïa Foundation, and together shaping the future of this legendary House” he said in a statement.

A new chapter for the house

It has been more than 3 years since the fashion house suffered the death of its founder, Azzedine Alaïa, an emblematic couturier of the modern era and of international renown.

Since the death of the Franco-Tunisian stylist, the house has reinterpreted his creations and tried to keep his legacy alive, in accordance with his rigorous and personal ethics. By appointing Pieter Mulier to take over the reins, the house marks the opening of a new page.

“His appointment marks the opening of an important new chapter for our company as we work together to carry Alaïa’s core values and distinctive style into the future,” said Myriam Serrano, Managing Director of Maison Alaïa. “Pieter stands out for his remarkable technical talent and dedication to craftsmanship, a keen eye for construction and a sense of timeless beauty that is deeply rooted in our house’s creative approach”.

Mulier will fly on its own wings and will devote itself exclusively to the House of Alaïa, to which it should bring a breath of innovation and novelty in terms of fashion.
