The Venice Biennale, a major international event for contemporary art and architecture, is back for its 59th edition on Saturday, April 23. Here is a quick overview of the program, works and events not to be missed!

The largest contemporary art event in the world is back this year, with a new and innovative program. Entitled “Il latte dei sogni” , “The milk of dreams” in French, this 59th edition seems to be based on surrealism, non-conformism and the imaginary. Its name pays tribute to the book by Leonora Carrington, a great figure of surrealism, who will exhibit several of her works in the Central Pavilion in the Giardini.

Narrated in a dreamlike style, capable of terrifying adults and children alike, Carrington’s stories imagine a free world of infinite possibilities, but also represent the allegory of a century that has imposed an untenable pressure on identity, Forcing Carrington to live in exile and to stay in psychiatric hospitals, to become an object of perpetual fascination and desire, but also a figure of rare strength and mystery, always escaping the limits of a fixed and coherent identity,” explains the curator of the Biennale, Cecilia Alemani. The latter is the first Italian woman to run the event!

In the usual Doge’s City of Venice, 80 national pavilions of contemporary art will be present in the Giardini gardens. The international pavilion will be located in the Arsenale, still in the Giardini, and the galleries (the “off”) will be scattered throughout Venice. The great show of the international pavilion, orchestrated by the Italian curator, is notably the most expected operation of this edition.

Cecilia Alemani, in a desire to distinguish herself from the previous Biennale and to honor women, has shown a great diversity in her choices. Indeed, out of the 1433 works imagined by 213 artists, 80% are women. 170 women artists will be honored this year. “For 125 years, it was an exhibition of men. It would be nice if visitors could look at it without questioning gender. Fifteen years ago, when women represented less than 10% of the artists exhibited at the Biennale, no one dared to say that it was a men’s biennale. Why should there be a problem when there are many women and few men?” she stressed.

Still according to Alemani, during the Biennale, which brings together many works of young modern women artists never exhibited before, some deserved to be rediscovered, like Leonor Fini or Katharina Grosse.

Leonor Fini, the figure of a surrealist artist

This French surrealist painter of Italian origin from the 1930s stood out from the surrealist movement for her authenticity, her feminine commitment through her works and her finesse of execution. She is particularly known for her paintings of elegant women with dreamy bodies, half human and half goddess, all in erotic settings. She will be exhibited at the International Pavilion in the Giardini.

Leonor Fini does not hesitate to highlight certain aspects of the relationship between men and women. She seems very authentic. We will show, in addition to her paintings, her illustrations, her clothes, her masks, the accessories she used to imagine changes in personalities” says Alemani.

Katharina Grosse, artist of the Espace Louis Vuitton

As its name suggests, the French luxury house has an art space within this event, and will highlight within it several contemporary artists, including: Katharina Grosse. This German artist has a unique way of making art. Indeed, she appropriates art to rework it in her own way. Of a gigantic size, she transforms her paintings into sculptures while making her abstract canvases painted with jets of color become immersive objects. Arranged from floor to ceiling in clever draperies, the visitor can even walk on them!

At the Biennale, she will propose an in situ work that plays with illusions and represents an image of her hands printed on a metal mesh fabric, with the idea of reflecting the movement of visitors. Ultimately, this work will be installed at the end of the Biennale, in the staircase of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Dior, also present at the Biennale 2022

This French luxury house is also involved in this 59th edition of the Biennale as it has become a donor. Several women artists who will be honored in this exhibition have also previously collaborated with Maria Grazia Chiuri, the artistic director of women’s fashion at Dior, on catwalk sets. This is particularly the case for the female artist Tomaso Binga.

Far from stopping there, Dior is renewing its partnership with a philanthropic organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Venice’s cultural treasures: Venetian Heritage. A fundraising gala will be organized by the two brands on the opening day of the Biennale to finance the restoration of the Ca’ d’Oro museum, considered the finest palace of Venetian Gothic architecture. It should also be noted that part of the proceeds of this collection will be donated to Ukrainian refugees in Italy.

Venice is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the heritage of humanity, and there are so many, so many things to restore and maintain that the Italian state can not cope. Venetian Heritage is one of the most serious associations helping the Italian State and Venice. [We will continue to help them as much as we can and this will not be the last time you will see us in Venice in one form or another” ,  said finally, Pietro Beccari, President and CEO of Christian Dior Couture.
