The RealReal publishes the first-ever scientific measurement of the impact of second hand for these luxury items put into circulation, in addition to ready-to-wear.

The RealReal, the largest online marketplace for second-hand luxury goods unveils the expansion of its sustainability calculator, a first-of-its-kind tool developed and launched in 2018 to quantify the impact of resale. It was originally designed to measure greenhouse gas emission savings and water footprint reduction through clothing re-sale. After a year of research and collaboration with environmental experts and consultants, The RealReal’s sustainability calculator also quantifies the positive impact of keeping handbags, fine jewelry and watches in circulation.

For more than a decade, we’ve focused on keeping more than 23 million items in circulation in pursuit of a more circular future,” explains James Rogers, director of sustainability at The RealReal. “Since its launch in 2018, the calculator has encouraged sustainable behavior by showing the savings customers personally experience from what they buy and sell on TRR. I’m thrilled that the calculator is now capturing impact data across even more categories, and we look forward to continuing to demonstrate the environmental power of second-hand shopping.

The RealReal’s sustainability calculator takes into account the impact of raw material production as well as the weight of the item. For apparel, the platform collects impact calculations for fabrics such as cotton, silk and nylon, and applies these calculations to several fabric blends across its inventory.

For jewelry and watches, the impact calculations include the materials used in bracelets and cases, including the weight of ceramics and common metals such as gold and silver, palladium, platinum, brass, bronze and stainless steel.

Since its inception and through March 31, 2022, The RealReal has saved over 2.8 billion liters of water and 52,767 metric tons of carbon (the amount absorbed by 8.8 million trees in one year) in all categories measured. A way to concretely measure the impact of clothing manufacturing and the circular economy proposed by the second-hand market.
