The Economic Observatory of the National Leather Council has revealed the good results of the French Leather Industry’s Foreign Trade for the year 2021.

The finding? France remains the leader in the leather sector on a global scale. Indeed, for the fourth consecutive year, the French leather industry ended the year with a positive trade balance, reaching a trade surplus of 3.7 billion euros.

Despite the Covid-19 epidemic that spared no sector worldwide, and the year 2020 having reflected a notable drop in imports and exports, particularly for France, last year witnessed the opposite trend. Indeed, in 2021, the French Leather Industry saw its imports increase by 14% and its exports by 23% compared to 2020. A consequent increase, therefore, all the more important as the latter were also higher than those of 2019, by 11%.

This has led to France becoming the fourth largest exporter in the world, behind China, Vietnam and Italy. On a global scale, France accounts for 5.9% of all leather exports.

At €14.7 billion, leather goods were the largest export in 2021 (68%), followed by footwear at 27%, raw materials and gloves and garments at 3% and 2% respectively.

On the import side, France is not left behind either, accounting for 6.2% of all imports in the global leather industry. Footwear dominates this variable with 61% of total imports, followed by leather goods (31%).

A variable result according to the regions

However, French activity is not the same according to the regions of the world. During the year 2021, two countries stood out from the others: China and the United States, which became France’s top two customers. On the Asian side, 43% of French exports went to Asia, an increase of 36% compared to last year. The Chinese were keen on leather goods, mainly handbags, accounting for 91% of exports, worth 2.25 billion euros.

The United States accounted for 14% of French exports in 2021. Like its Chinese counterpart, the Americans turned more to French leather goods, accounting for 80% (1.42 billion euros) of total exports.

Europe, on the other hand, did not show the same good results as the two previous ones. Indeed, although 42% of French exports were concentrated in Europe, the increase in exports was not obvious, at only 9%.

If however Spain, Italy and Germany show good results and are dynamic towards French leather, one country remains however behind for several years : the United Kingdom. Between 2019 and 2021, sales fell by an average of 30.5%. Moreover, this country represented 4% of French exports in 2021, compared to 9% in 2019. As a sign of a real decline, the Brexit would be the main cause of the decline of this customer for the French Leather Industry.

In 2021, sales to this island country have respectively fallen by 47% for footwear, 39% for gloves, and finally, 19% for leather goods.

The crisis linked to Covid-19 has left its mark, both on the way we consume and produce. […] The crisis is an opportunity to promote our know-how, French excellence, and to promote the sustainability of our industry and its products on an international scale. Lastly, I am delighted that, in general, France is able to re-establish fruitful links with its historical suppliers and customers from before the crisis, particularly with China, enabling the majority of our sectors to regain, or even exceed, their 2019 performance. The leather industry is once again proving its dynamism,” stressed Frank Boehly, President of the Conseil National du Cuir.
