This Tuesday, January 25 was held the press conference “Wishes and commitments 2022” of the French Leather Industry. It was an opportunity to review the four major challenges for 2022 announced : CSR, jobs, training and competitiveness.

On this occasion, Frank Boehly, President of the CNC, returned to the economic balance sheet 2021 of the leather industry and its challenges for 2022. Key sectors of the industry, the French Federations of Footwear, Leather Goods, Hides and Skins and the Tannery and Leather Goods were gathered to present the actions taken in their areas.

This conference was an opportunity to emphasize that the industry has experienced a positive economic recovery, a recovery that allows the key sectors of the industry to return to pre-crisis results. Indeed, in 2021, exports of the French Leather Industry increased by 24% compared to 2020 and by 9% compared to 2019 : an increase of 44% for raw hides and skins, 17% for tanning and fleshing, 14% for footwear and 30% for leather goods.

Jobs, training, competitiveness and CSR at the heart of the sector’s 2022 challenges

In this new year, the leather industry has focused on four major issues that are decisive for the further development of the industry and its related sectors. One of the first objectives is to defend the leather trades and know-how ; to promote employment and training ; to improve the competitiveness of companies ; to integrate CSR in companies.

The issue of training and recruitment was also at the heart of the discussions, because today, companies in the sector are struggling to recruit even though there are many job prospects. The aim is to raise awareness among the younger generation of the training and employment opportunities in the leather sector, because many young people are unaware of the jobs offered by the sector. For example, it is estimated that there are 3,000 jobs available each year in the French leather goods sector.

Frank Boehly, President of the Conseil National du Cuir, insisted on the need to provide adequate financial means to facilitate the modernisation of the sector. Frank Boehly declared: “Today, the distribution companies of the Filière Française du Cuir need massive aid to take up the post-Covid-19 challenge. It is essential to preserve the businesses of the French Leather Industry in order to guarantee the 100,000 jobs at stake and to maintain local shops throughout the country. Preserving jobs is the industry’s priority. Without the help of the State, the sector will not succeed.”

Finally, Frank Boehly closed the conference with an exclusive announcement of the fourth edition of the Sustainable Leather Forum. The industry’s must-attend event will return on September 12 at the Palais Brongniart. It will be an opportunity for leather producers and users, and by extension, all those who contribute to the production, use or distribution of leather, to address various issues facing the industry.
