Containment has more than ever boosted the creativity and inventiveness of fashion designers. Conceived during the containment, the Balmain Croisière 2021 collection called Zoom brings together five personalities from the world of cinema and fashion who have given free rein to their imagination to appropriate and reinterpret the different pieces of this project.
As part of this collection, Balmain‘s artistic director sent several looks from his collection to Jon Kortajarena, Jorge Lopez, Nicholas Galitzine, Maluma and Rome Flynn, all of whom had the opportunity to join the project by photographing themselves wearing the different looks created by the brand.
Olivier Rousteing and his team built this collection under extraordinary conditions, using WhatsApp and video conferencing, while the world was slowed down by the confined environment.
“The embroideries were done by old ladies working in their kitchen in the south of Italy. In Japan, they were working in their living room. It was tough,” said the designer, who was forced to try out the male prototypes in his Parisian apartment. “The fabrics — that was a struggle because I was choosing by Zoom.”
In fine, more than 400 silhouettes for women and 300 for men, very pop looks with acidulous colours unveiled on June 15th during a digital showroom. A collection full of references from the 90s, with a return to “Pretty Woman”, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Beverly Hills, 90210”.
“It’s a colorful and happy collection,” said Olivier Rousteing. Double-breasted jackets, flowing shirts in color-block and OVNI sneakers, the pieces blend together in an explosion of color.
A beautiful challenge accomplished by the creator, carried by the impulses of solidarity and optimism observed during this unprecedented period. Now proud to say, “It was just a new world, but we made it.”
Now the containment behind us, it is in a castle in Normandy that he took his team to shoot the look book, waiting for an official presentation of his collection during a public event in Paris in July.
