February 6 to 22, Milan and the surrounding resorts hosted the Winter Olympics and turned them into a global showcase : the event proved to be a powerful economic driver for northern Italy.
In terms of sport, the popular enthusiasm for the 2026 Olympic Games lived up to expectations : 92 countries were represented by nearly 3,000 athletes who made a lasting impression with their outstanding performances. While Norway swept the board in terms of gold medals and overall medal count (no fewer than 41 in total), one might wonder whether the real winner was Italy.
Indeed, between the hundreds of thousands of visitors, international delegations, and millions of television viewers around the world, the long-term impact could well be economic. Estimates suggest an overall economic impact of around €5.3 billion.
