Sotheby’s Auction House announced on Wednesday that it will be auctioning off the largest blue diamond ever : “De Beers Cullinan Blue”. The sale, which is sure to make a lasting impression, will take place in Hong Kong in April.
The De Beers Cullinan Blue is currently estimated to fetch over $48 million, according to the Sotheby’s press release.

The 15+ carat diamond was discovered in 2021 at the Cullinan mine in South Africa, one of the world’s few sources of blue diamonds. This diamond is the “largest blue diamond without impurities” ever recorded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), says Sotheby’s.
“It’s rare because of the size. It’s over 15 carats. It’s a vivid blue. It’s internally flawless. And really one of the most rare aspects of it is the cut.”, says Frank Everett, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales at Sotheby’s.
“I think we’re going to see tremendous interest in this stone when it finally comes to auction. The market is very strong for jewelry at the moment, has been really for the last several years, but one of the strongest segments is colored diamonds. And one of the strongest colors is blue.” , adds Frank Everett.
