The American hotel group Radisson Hotel Group is planning to double its African portfolio and increase its number of properties in West and Central Africa from twenty-five to fifty by 2025.

Radisson clearly considers these two African regions as key markets in its development strategy on the continent. While in 2008 the group had only one hotel in the region, it now operates twenty-five hotels and intends to double this number by 2025.

Despite the pandemic, Africa remains a strategic territory for the hotel group’s expansion. In 2020, Radisson was able to increase its portfolio in West and Central Africa with the signing of three new hotels for a total of 625 rooms, which allowed it to strengthen its presence in the Nigerian and Malian markets, while entering the Ghanaian market. Another milestone for the group was the launch of the Radisson Collection brand in Africa, with the opening of the Radisson Collection Hotel in Bamako, Mali in December 2020.

Similarly, Radisson launched its Radisson Individuals project in Africa in April 2021, specifically in Accra, Ghana, with a hotel scheduled to open in the second half of 2022. Radisson Individuals is a project that comes against the backdrop of the consolidation of the hotel sector caused by the pandemic. The project is a conversion brand that offers independent hotels and local or regional chains the opportunity to become part of the Radisson Hotel Group’s global platform, while allowing them to retain their character and identity. Radisson Individuals is therefore a way for the group to grow even faster.

We have identified six countries for development in West and Central Africa, with a clear city-wide growth strategy in key African capitals, financial centres and tourist destinations,” said Erwan Garnier, in charge of Radisson‘s development in Africa. “We have identified eight proactive cities, Abuja, Lagos, Accra, Abidja, Dakar, Yaoundé, Douala and Kinshasa, where we are focusing our efforts for large-scale expansion.”

Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the countries in which Radisson Hotel Group is investing the most effort, with the construction of hotels for Radisson Blu or Park Inn by Radisson. Our development strategy for West and Central Africa is focused on business hotels, resorts, serviced flats and mixed-use projects,” explains Erwan Garnier.
