The new edition of Révélations takes place from June 7 to 10 at the Grand Palais Ephémère in Paris. For the past ten years, the Biennial has enabled professionals and the general public to discover or revisit a selection of the most talented contemporary international designers, sublimating ancestral know-how, both established and up-and-coming.

From June 7 to 11, 2023 (with a pre-opening dedicated to prescribers on June 7), this is the not-to-be-missed international rendez-vous for art creation. Organized by Atelier d’Art de France (the trade association representing 281 art crafts), Révélations celebrates its tenth anniversary this year in Paris, at the heart of the Grand Palais Ephémère. This sixth edition of the biennial event brings together 350 creators from all over the world, who draw on ancestral skills (glassmaking, cabinetmaking, ceramics, textiles, decorative painting, jewellery-making, etc.) to sublimate them into contemporary works of art.

It’s an opportunity for fruitful “encounters” “between artists, students, young designers, the informed public and industry professionals”.

While Révélations brings undeniable visibility to professionals, the general public can also take advantage of one-hour guided tours led by lecturers to “discover exceptional pieces from all over the world”, “perceive the multiple approaches of designers, unsuspected materials and exceptional know-how”.

Québec, guest of honor

Quebec is the guest of honor at this year’s show, presenting 34 artists. A “body of work” that “stems from a desire to showcase the originality, diversity and quality of contemporary fine crafts, drawn from the wealth of creators residing throughout Quebec”, emphasizes Julien Silvestre, Executive Director of the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec.

Italy, a country of arts and crafts par excellence, is also well represented at this year’s event, with a collective pavilion bringing together art manufactures, houses of excellence and Italian designers. Behind this initiative is the very active ICE, the Italian government agency for foreign trade, whose vocation is to promote Italian companies beyond their borders.

Le Banquet, the Biennale’s signature exhibition, features the very best in international art. Some one hundred works from 10 regions of the world are showcased in a “refined scenography”. Each area of Le Banquet, supported by a leading institution, “unveils original and contemporary views of nearly 70 craftsmen, material artists, designers and manufacturers on ancestral or ultra-modern techniques, with the aim of fully integrating fine crafts into tomorrow’s cultural and economic dynamic”.

A banquet of works

The Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec and the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec have selected Nadia Myre, who brings together ceramics, graphic art, paper basketry and juxtapositions of materials, and Julie Bénédicte Lambert, for her work woven from cotton, linen and jute paper and sublimated with Chinese ink.

Of course, France is also represented, with the aim of highlighting heritage skills in the light of today’s challenges. It has chosen to present “exceptional pieces from the collections of the Mobilier national, as part of a program to promote their collections”. These have been revisited by contemporary visual artists in the light of current “social and environmental reflections”.

As part of the European Year of Skills, the World Crafts Council Europe has selected European craftspeople representing an open range of “materials, techniques and visions of European creativity”.

The Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation, for its part, has “explored the way in which crafts are a laboratory of ideas, materials and forms for the world of fashion within Chinese culture, through collaborations between 10 Chinese art manufactures with unique local skills and designers and artistic directors from internationally renowned luxury houses based in China”.

But it will also be possible to discover designers from countries new to the Banquet, namely Egypt (supported by the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Egypt & Egyptian Handicrafts Export Council), Ecuador (supported by the Centro interamericano de Artes Populares) and Rwanda (supported by Rwanda Arts Initiatives).

Revealing talent

“A genuine springboard and catalyst for young creation”, Révélations is also, of course, as its name suggests…a revealer of promising talent.

Among the young artists exhibiting at the show, Révélations will feature the two 2023 winners of the Prix de la Jeune Création Métiers d’Art: Siqou, a ceramist with a passion for the Arctic, and Tiphaine Germaneau, who “creates flat glass in search of graphic expressions that push the limits of perception”.

Organized since 1960 by Ateliers d’Art de France, the prize is awarded each year to designers under 35 years of age, working in one of the 281 crafts. The prizewinners benefit from a real springboard, with both personalized professional support and a stand offered at one of the syndicate’s international trade shows, in this case Révélations.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Révélations looks back on a decade of young talent, showcased at the entrance to the show in the L’Agora space. On display are recent or previously unseen works by the winners of the Prix de la Jeune Création Métiers d’Art, who have been honored since 2013. Most of them “have come a long way since this recognition, and each now has a singular artistic signature at the heart of French creation”.
