MSC Croisières invests in construction of two hydrogen-powered luxury ships

Explora Journeys, MSC Croisières’ new luxury line just launched on May 30, will have six luxury ships by 2028, two of which will be hydrogenpowered.

Originally planned to be just four, Explora Journeys and Italian shipyard Fincantieri have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to build two new hydrogen-powered luxury liners, bringing the brand’s total number of ships to six. For this project, MSC Croisières has invested €3.5 billion, of which €120 million has been added for these two new ships.

While the Explora I, II, III and IV ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Explora V and VI will be equipped with “a new generation of engines running on liquefied natural gas, a solution to the problem of methane spillage” as well as a “liquid hydrogen containment system,” the group said later.
