The legal battle between former spouses Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie over the Miraval vineyard estate takes a new turn. Nouvel, the actress’s former company, supports the subpoena of the Italian group Campari, distributor of Miraval wines since September 2023.
New development in the Miraval affair between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Since announcing their separation in 2016, the Hollywood couple has constantly made headlines as tabloids eagerly relay the saga of their complicated divorce.
While the thorny issue of the custody of their six children seems to have been resolved – Angelina Jolie will retain primary physical custody, while Brad Pitt will have visitation rights – another issue remains concerning one of the couple’s properties.
Now, the setting of the legal battle between the two actors is not a movie set, but a French vineyard estate.
A prestigious estate
Since 2008, the prestigious Miraval estate, located in the Var, has been owned by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
Built in the 17th century, the Château de Miraval is one of the jewels of southern France. Its estate spans 600 hectares and includes a pine forest, an olive grove, and a vineyard near the village of Correns.
Renowned for its rosé wines, the estate also houses the famous Studio Miraval. Pianist Jacques Loussier, the owner of the place in 1970, decided at the time to set up a recording studio there. Over the years, Studio Miraval has seen many big names in music, such as Pink Floyd, Sting, and The Cranberries.
A wedding gift
Falling under the spell of the Var institution and its history, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie bought it for 25 million euros on May 8, 2008. Shortly before the acquisition, the actor dismissed the suggestion of Angelina Jolie’s commercial director to add a clause stipulating that in the event of the couple’s separation, each would have the right to buy the other’s share.
Following the conclusion of the sale, the “Seven Years in Tibet” actor owned a 60% stake in the wine business and estate, while the remaining 40% went to Angelina Jolie through her company Nouvel LLC. Shortly before the couple’s wedding in 2014, Brad Pitt decided to “sell” his future wife 10% of his share for a symbolic euro.
This gesture, driven by romanticism and the desire for an equal partnership, is ultimately what, a few years later, sows discord.
Brad Pitt, almost winning
In October 2021, Angelina Jolie, then separated from her ex-husband since 2016, decided to sell all of her shares to Tenute del Mondo, a subsidiary of the Stoli group specializing in wines and spirits. A “betrayal,” according to Brad Pitt, which goes against their promise never to dispose of their shares without the other’s consent.
A new legal battle begins when the American actor demands the return of the 10% he gave to his ex-wife, as she allegedly never paid the symbolic euro agreed upon.
He eventually won on February 1 before the courts of California and Luxembourg. While it was decided that, for now, the 10% would go back to Brad Pitt, the conflict is far from over: “It’s the equivalent of a sequestration. It’s not a final decision,” a source told the American magazine Page Six.
