A loyal supporter of Milan Design Week since 2005, the Lexus car brand is returning to the next edition, from April 18 to 23, with a double program. The program includes an installation by New York architect Suchi Reddy and the prototypes of the four winners of the Lexus Design Award 2023.

In April, don’t lose track of yourself… But don’t forget to visit Milan Design Week! From April 18 to 23, the big design fair is back. Also known by its Italian name of “Fuorisalone,” it is traditionally held at the same time as the Furniture Fair.

Design companies, designers and architects are taking over the historic center of the Italian business capital to display installations that reflect current trends.

A regular visitor

Lexus is a regular visitor and will not miss the event. Since 2005, it has been working to offer “immersive and exciting experiences,” collaborating with world-renowned designers such as Philippe Nigro, Neri Oxman, Sou Fujimoto, Rhizomatics, and Germane Barnes. This edition will discover an installation signed by a big name: the architect and New York artist Suchi Reddy. But also, the prototypes of promising talents, the four winners of the Lexus Design Award 2023.

“We are thrilled to extend our collaboration with the inimitable Suchi Reddy and to see the Lexus Electrified Sport come to life alongside the work of Lexus Design Award winners. Suchi’s commitment to making design work for a better future reflects the innovative spirit of the award and we can’t imagine a more perfect synergy for this year’s presentation,” said Brian Bolain, Head of Global Marketing at Lexus.

A reinvented work

Suchi Reddy’s work, called “Shaped by Air,” presented for this Milan 2023 edition, had already been commissioned by Lexus for a first presentation at the Miami Art and Design Week 2022. Its central idea: is to celebrate a commitment to “human-centered, carbon-neutral, and impeccably crafted design.”

For her presentation at Milan’s Superstudio, the founder of Reddymade Architecture and Design didn’t fail to reinvent her installation, which is intended to be a “scaled interpretation of the Lexus Electrified Sport, shaped by light and with green leaf-shaped cutouts that suggest movement through nature.” In the Lombardy capital, these shapes, evoking both the curves of a Lexus vehicle and the cut-outs of Henri Matisse, will be suspended from the ceiling, like a mobile. Made with recycled/reused consumer materials, the moving sculpture, at first glance abstract, reveals the silhouette of a car when approached.

“Lexus’ ongoing commitment to innovation – and its support for an artistic approach that is a confluence of art and design – led me to envision this immersive experience as both a sculpture and a multi-sensory spatial experience,” explained Suchi Reddy.

In another pleasant surprise, and consistent with the concept of quiet driving associated with Lexus vehicles, Suchi Reddy has imagined a “welcoming, contemplative and enveloping environment” for his installation: a feeling “of walking in a forest,” with the “rustling of leaves” underfoot, a living room dedicated to rest and reflection, worthy of the tradition of excellence in Japanese hospitality dear to Lexus.

Lexus Design Award 2023

In a gallery adjacent to the “Shaped by Air” installation, the prototypes of the four winners of the Lexus Design Award 2023 will be on display. This is the eleventh edition of the award, which celebrates new creative talent from around the world. Denmark-based Pavels Hedström from Sweden, Jiaming Liu from China, the US-based duo Temporary Office (Vincent Lai from Singapore and Douglas Lee from Canada), and Kyeongho Park and Yejin Heo from Korea were selected from among 2,068 applicants from 63 different countries!

They were invited to imagine installations “anticipating the challenges of the future,” respecting “the principles of the Lexus brand: Anticipate, Innovate, and Captivate while improving people’s happiness!  A very ambitious program that the general public will be asked to vote on via the People’s Choice award, organized for the first time.  Voting for their favorite design concept will open in April to visitors to Milan Design Week and those who discover the works online.
