Mercedes dominates luxury car sales in India

Mercedes-Benz has recorded more sales than all of its competitors in the luxury car segment in India for the year 2021. The third quarter was its best in the country. Sales were up 79% compared to last year. The brand even says it would have sold 20% more without the pandemic-related disruption.

Mercedes-Benz sold 8 958 luxury cars in India between January and September 2021, compared to 5 007 vehicles sold in the same period in 2020, which were down on 2019 due to the pandemic.

But it is the sales of the third quarter that show the strongest increase. They have almost doubled compared to the same period last year. The brand claims that these increases are primarily due to an increase in demand for limousine models, including the A-Class, GLA and GLS. As a result, the waiting time for one of these models now varies between one and eight months depending on location.

Most importantly, Mercedes-Benz dominates the luxury car market in India. The country’s growth and the emergence of a certain class that is increasingly wealthy and numerous is helping a lot. In this market, the brand’s growth and sales have outstripped that of its rival BMW, which in turn has announced a 45% increase in year-to-date sales over the previous year.

We have built up a strong order book for most of our new and existing products, and we are working hard to get these cars to customers on time. We expect the upcoming festive season to build on this momentum and create additional demand,” said Martin Schwenk, managing director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

This boom in demand for luxury cars in India and 2021 is primarily due to pent-up demand imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Similarly, the launch of a number of models is fuelling consumer interest. Mercedes-Benz has launched 11 models so far in 2021.

Nevertheless, luxury car sales in India remain below pre-crisis levels at-casinos.com. 2018 was the best year, with no less than 40,340 sales of all makes and models.
