Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz is teaming up with autonomous sensor manufacturer Luminar Technologies Inc. in a partnership aimed at accelerating the development of future automated driving technologies in next-generation Mercedes cars.
Luminar, a US-based laser lidar startup, has signed a new partnership with Mercedes-Benz that includes providing sensors for its luxury vehicles and collecting data on the road to improve automated driving.

The new partnership with Luminar underlines Mercedes-Benz’ policy of expanding its network of technology partners and leading suppliers for its cars.
In order to improve the safety of Mercedes cars and to help them operate autonomously during motorway driving, this partnership aims to industrialise and integrate Luminar’s fundamental technology – Iris Lidar – into production Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Safety is a central element of the Mercedes-Benz brand, which has been developing numerous safety measures for its vehicles for 70 years. Through this partnership, Luminar will focus its approach on data-driven development to continuously improve and update Mercedes-Benz products.
“Much better automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance systems, those kinds of capabilities that can be derived from it. It’s not just about autonomy, it’s actually about saving lives more generally through better active safety systems,” said Luminar founder and CEO, Austin Russell.
At the same time, the German carmaker also acquired 1.5 million shares in the technology company.
“This is a great moment for us and kind of a historic partnership that really validates the overall thesis we’ve had,” Russell said. “The largest luxury automaker, the top of the food chain, is betting on us for the future of their technology for autonomous systems and next generation safety systems,” he continued.
The sensors use lasers to create 3D “point cloud” maps of surrounding objects by day and night, and thus enhance the vision system of autonomous vehicles.
“Luminar is the perfect addition to our existing list of first-class cooperations with leading technology companies,” said Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ technical director for development and procurement. “Cooperation is an essential part of the Mercedes-Benz strategy. Therefore, I am very pleased to have Austin Russell and Luminar on board for our journey. Luminar’s supply agreements, including the new one with Mercedes, focus on the use of lidar for personal vehicles, […] on optimising its technology for autonomous motorway driving, where lidar’s ability to see objects hundreds of metres ahead is critical.”
Details of which specific models will have these sensors and when they will be unveiled have not yet been revealed, however.
