Through its beauty division, the Kering group has announced an investment in the niche perfume brand Matière Première.
The French perfume manufacturer Matière Première is embarking on a new chapter of its development. Following a second round of funding initiated by the brand, Kering has acquired a minority stake through its Kering Beauté division. This operation is expected to ensure significant growth for Matière Première with the support of one of the world’s largest luxury groups.
Launched in 2019 by perfumer Aurélien Guichard, the high-end fragrance brand Matière Première is experiencing increasing enthusiasm for niche perfumes. In 2023, the company’s retail sales increased by 70%, reaching 30 million euros. “Matière Première is experiencing extremely rapid growth,” commented Caius von Knorring, the brand’s general manager. Born out of an ambition to offer very high-quality contemporary French perfumery, Matière Première creates its perfumes based on a central natural ingredient used in extreme dosage. This formula guarantees rapid success for each new release, as is the case with the best-selling fragrance Vanilla Powder, launched in October 2023, which already represents a quarter of Matière Première’s global sales.
Kering on the Hunt for New Talents
The potential of Matière Première has not escaped Kering, which has just acquired a minority stake in the perfume brand. This is the first time the beauty division of the group led by François Pinault has carried out a transaction of this nature.
Created in early 2023, Kering Beauté had so far focused on developing new lines for the Houses in its own portfolio, such as Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta. Last October, the Anglo-French high perfumery house Creed officially joined the ranks following an acquisition by Kering estimated at 3.5 billion euros.
