After writing an open letter to the President of the Republic on November 5, the communist deputy of Seine-Maritime, Sébastien Jumel, underlines a first step forward on the part of the French government.

In the heart of the French glass industry, often nicknamed the “Glass Valley”, 70 companies are in trouble with this crisis affecting the luxury bottling industry.

It’s 7,000 jobs, it’s the flagship of craftsmanship. This industry is affected by the health crisis,” he said. “The production of perfume bottles has fallen by 40%,  and the major luxury groups LVMH, Chanel, Yves-Rocher buy 200 million perfumes abroad for a few cents of difference with the French glassmakers“.

The deputy Sébastien Jumel, who has been asking for several weeks for a government reaction to the crisis facing the French glass industry, and who has repeatedly invited French groups to promote Made in France, received an answer from Olivia Grégoire on Tuesday morning.

The Secretary of State for Social Economy first announced that the two glassmakers Pochet du Courval and Verescence will benefit from financial support, amounting to 800,000 €, in order to reduce CO2 emissions produced by their furnaces.

The government then undertook to obtain commitments of solidarity from the National Council of the Glass Industry towards the various players in the sector. A few days before the valley’s cosmetics gathering, the government also called on luxury groups to obtain concrete commitments for supplies in France.

The professional association of the cosmetics sector will meet on Tuesday, December 1 to “take stock of the solidarity commitments within the sector, the shortages and the actions to be taken“.
