One of the most famous works of contemporary art is to be auctioned by Christie’s in New York.

Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” or one of Andy Warhol‘s most famous works in the world, will be auctioned at Christie’s in New York in May 2022. This iconic 1964 portrait of actress Marilyn Monroe is estimated to fetch $200 million, and could go much higher, making it the most expensive 10th century artwork ever sold at auction.

The record is currently held by the “Salvator Mundi” , believed to be by Leonardo da Vinci, which was sold in November 2017 for $450.3 million by Christie’s in New York.

It is currently owned by the Zurich-based Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation, which will use the proceeds of the sale “to improve the lives of children around the world through health and education programmes. (…) With 100% of the sale of a single painting going to charity, this is the highest auction for philanthropic purposes since the Peggy and David Rockefeller collection in 2018,” according to Christie’s.

For Georg Frei, president of the Ammann Foundation, “Andy Warhol’s image of Marilyn, which is certainly more famous today than the original photograph from Henry Hathaway’s film Niagara, is a testament to her undiminished visual power in the new millennium” . The sale is already generating a great deal of buzz and interest among buyers and art collectors as one of the most recognised and influential works of the 20th century.
