Forbes Poll: Recovery of the luxury hotel business within a year

According to a global survey conducted by Forbes, luxury hoteliers are hoping to leave the Covid-19 era behind and expect their business to return to normal within a year.

 

In a recent survey conducted by Forbes Travel Guide, the media interviewed hotel managers and executives from around the world – 438 hoteliers in 64 countries.

 

64% of those surveyed said it is a challenge to adapt and maintain luxury service.

 

In 58% of establishments, more than 76% of employees have been laid off, underlining the devastating impact of the crisis.

 

According to the survey, 71% of luxury hotels plan to reopen their doors by September and 70% are confident that business will return to sustainable levels within the next 12 months, while 86% are very confident that they can handle an outbreak of Covid-19.

 

In addition, the media claims that some hoteliers have created ingenious ways to keep the guest experience more fluid and enjoyable than ever.

 

Staff and public safety at the forefront

 

To illustrate this study, Forbes highlighted the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania that has moved to a pre-registration process where guests can pick up their clean, pre-sealed room key upon arrival to avoid contact with staff.

 

The same goes for Rhode Island’s Ocean House, which has reinvented happy hour by introducing a bold red cocktail cart that rolls door-to-door each night for each guest.

 

That said, at the time of the June survey, 41% of the hotels surveyed were still closed and the majority planned to reopen by July – 38% in August, 18% in August and 15% in September.

 

Among those that decided to reopen, the survey revealed that the safety of staff and the public is at the forefront of health procedures.

 

Indeed, 97% of respondents reported providing staff with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and 95% reported increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfection.

 

Other measures taken by hoteliers include capacity control measures throughout the establishment, which concern 75% of hoteliers. But also, for 81% of them, the modification of spaces reserved for guests and the public in order to allow social distancing.

 

That said, hospitality will be different, but this will not prevent hoteliers from putting the emphasis on the guest experience.

 

It should also be noted that some guests were not won over by their stay.

 

Some hoteliers have received negative comments on the new measures.

 

One of them said “Guests are not interested in wearing the mask and are not afraid of the Covid-19“.

 

Another staff member added that “some comment positively on the additional measures. Others see it as a disadvantage for their stay in a luxury hotel“.
