The American company Estée Lauder was the victim of a hacking attack on Tuesday. This incident has caused, and is expected to cause in the coming days, disruptions to some of the company’s business operations.

In the wake of Tuesday’s hacking attack, cosmetics group Estée Lauder said it was working to understand the nature and scope of the stolen data. To this end, it is attempting to restore the affected systems and has put in place measures to secure its operations.

The company, which owns brands such as MAC Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown and Tom Ford Beauty, has also taken some of its systems offline to mitigate the incident. It has also launched an investigation, in coordination with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts.

This incident comes at a bad time for Estée Lauder, which was already forecasting lower-than-expected sales and profits for the year in May. This underperformance is due in particular to the slow recovery of duty-free and travel destinations, especially in Asia.

Other companies in turmoil

Like the cosmetics group, other companies have been affected by data breaches. In September, Grand Theft Auto maker Take-Two Interactive Software confirmed the first leak of images from the video game ahead of its release, while private chauffeur company Uber was forced to shut down several internal communications for a week after a cybersecurity incident.

In January, wireless operator T-Mobile faced its second major cyberattack in less than two years, exposing more than 37 million accounts.

Last March, Italian carmaker Ferrari was the target of a virtual attack, targeting the confidential data of some of its customers around the world.
