Chantal Thomass: An auction dedicated to her “40 years of fashion”

On March 5, the Millon auction house is organizing an auction dedicated to the most famous creations of Chantal Thomass. The auction will take place in Paris, more precisely in Drouot, and will be chaired by the designer herself, whose career will be retraced on this occasion. Didier Ludot, an expert in 20th century haute couture and luxury ready-to-wear will also accompany the artist.

 

The sale will be preceded by an online sale in mid-February of 355 pieces, at the end of three days of exhibition.

 

The auction will not only sell the designer’s masterpieces, it will also commemorate the journey made by the artist, who has left her mark on several generations.

 

From her position as artistic director for Coca-Cola Light in 2014 to that of a designer and perfume creator, the event will be an opportunity for the public to really discover the world of the woman who overturned the traditional codes of lingerie.

 

“Fanciful, impertinent, such is my universe”, confides the designer.

 

World-renowned for her feminine lingerie, the sale will nevertheless remind us, through the presentation of iconic ready-to-wear pieces, that Chantal Thomass also tackled clothing and accessories, redesigning the contours of femininity in the 80s and 90s. 

 

Among the most famous: the ivory quilted down jacket dress from a collaboration with Moncler for the fall-winter 1992, the “vase and flowers” hat in multicolored straw from the spring-summer 1992 collection, the “mask” mules in red leather and strassed black leather from the fall-winter 1992 collection, the “strapless” backpack in orange nylon lined with mink from the winter 1990 collection…

 

In total, more than 270 pieces of all types will be offered to collectors and fashion enthusiasts. It is important to know that behind each emblematic piece there is a story behind it, which makes them pieces of significant value.

 

Chantal Thomass has been planning for some time to auction these “archives“. In 2019, she had expressed herself to France television:

“I have already donated a lot of them to various museums such as the fashion museum in Marseille or the Palais Galliera in Paris. I have kept 150 m2 of clothes, 40 or 50 models of bags, glasses… When I look back at my archives, twenty years ago, I see that at the time mainly French materials were used. We don’t have them anymore: nowadays, we find less mid-range, but mainly low-end or very expensive ones. This has evolved in an astonishing way: in the 90s, you could dress in designers’ shops with beautiful materials and French manufacturing”.
