Sportswear: the next phase of the Burberry Forward recovery plan

After expanding its outerwear offerings beyond just the trench coat as part of its successful “Forward” restructuring plan, Burberry is launching its first-ever sportswear line. This collection combines style, comfort, and well-being—key priorities for Gen Z.

Riccardo Tisci may have embraced, during his tenure as creative director (March 2018 – late September 2022), a punk aesthetic with urban and athletic influences, but Burberry had never before developed a sustainable sportswear line.

With Burberry Activewear, that has now changed. It took the brand 170 years to take the plunge. In line with its revitalization plan, the brand with the equestrian knight logo designed this new lifestyle collection to place it “in the House’s tradition of sports and outdoor wear.”

Sports Wardrobe Essentials

Burberry Activewear offers sports essentials and lightweight layering pieces, ranging from workout tops, joggers, and leggings to hooded jackets and vests, in a palette of shades dear to Burberry—namely beige, of course, but also black, charcoal gray, and Knight blue.

Designed to move with you, the collection—at the intersection of style and functionality—is crafted from soft, lightweight, and breathable fabrics to ensure natural comfort all day long.

True to its quintessentially British identity, Burberry highlights several visual details rediscovered by the current creative director—since September 2022—and former Bottega Veneta designer, Daniel Lee, such as the Check tartan pattern and its second historic logo, the equestrian knight. The latter is rendered in a reflective version.

Burberry is thus the latest luxury brand to launch a more sporty line. Most recently, it was the American high-end lingerie brand Fleur du Mal that ventured into this now-essential realm.
