Bentley Auto Manufacturer posts record sales in 2020 thanks to China

Despite the closure of the Bentley plant during the first lockdown in England, the luxury car manufacturer recorded record sales of 11,206 cars in 2020, thanks in particular to a 48% increase in Chinese demand.

 

Bentley, now owned by Volkswagen, announced in June that it was cutting 1,000 of the 4,000 jobs it was then providing, in order to save £10 million. The firm has since been able to protect 200 of its jobs, although 800 employees have been made redundant.

However, the difficulties imposed by the health crisis did not prevent Bentley from returning to growth in 2020. “The plant in the north of England did not produce vehicles for seven weeks because restrictions were imposed in March and then ran at half its normal production for the next nine weeks, but the new models helped to increase overall demand,” the carmaker said on Tuesday, January 5.
