Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess has just announced that Audi and Porsche, two brands belonging to the German group, will enter Formula 1 in 2026.
For Audi, its last involvement in competition dates back to the 1930s, until the Second World War, and for Porsche to the early 1960s. A change in regulations led to the latter’s withdrawal from competition. Now a new regulatory horizon for the automobile has brought it back.
The Volkswagen group sees an opportunity to get back into the race with the changes to the regulations in 2026. These will force manufacturers to increase the electric share of powertrains and synthetic fuels.
“As a newcomer, we can’t catch up, it takes five to ten years to get ahead, observed Herbert Diess. We can only be competitive if there is a big change in regulations, and that’s what will happen in 2026 when they increase the electric part of the engine. Both brands think that it is a good thing to get involved and they are giving priority to this project”.
The biggest championship.
Another reason to bet on F1 for the group is that he believes it will still be “the biggest championship in 2026 and 2028.” Porsche could partner with engine manufacturer Red Bull in a “Red Bull Porsche” team. While rumours are circulating that Audi is joining forces with McLaren.
More than 70 million viewers follow the Grand Prix around the world, including nearly 2.5 million in France. The last Grand Prix of the 2021 season, in Abu Dhabi, was even followed by 108.7 million viewers ! In terms of cumulative TV audience, Formula 1 claims 1.55 billion viewers who attended the races in 2021.
