Exports of French wines and spirits fell in 2023. However, the sector recorded the second-best sales figures in its history.
According to the latest annual report from the French Federation of Wine and Spirits Exporters (FEVS), French wine and spirits exports fell in 2023, following two record years. This decline is due in particular to inflation, which has reduced demand, and to the liquidation of distributor stocks on the US market.
Wines and spirits account for a significant proportion of French exports, making them the country’s second-largest trade surplus behind aeronautics. In 2023, total exports of French wines and spirits generated sales of €16.2 billion, down 5.9% on the record level of 2022, according to FEVS. Despite this, the sector regards the decline as a “soft landing”, with export sales posting the second-best performance in history.
