The announcements made this Thursday by the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo mark a turning point in the future development of the brand. Indeed, the latter has decided to make its luxury models sustainable, and to offer them without leather.

Even in the automotive industry, luxury has ambitions to go green. Swedish carmaker Volvo has revealed its ambitions for the future of its range of luxury electric vehicles, which will now be leather-free, starting with their new C40 Recharge.

Nevertheless, the brand does not intend to cut back on the quality and comfort of its vehicles. Thus, consumers will have several options at their disposal: Volvo offers high-quality alternatives from recycled resources, such as wool blends or a new interior material made of recycled corks from the wine industry and Swedish and Finnish forestry.

Volvo‘s announcements were made in conjunction with the release of a report titled “The Rise of Conscious Design,” by trend forecasting firm The Future Laboratory. The report highlights the fact that a brand’s environmental policies are now a major factor in consumers’ choice to buy luxury goods.

Volvo‘s decision is also driven by some concern about the negative environmental impacts of cattle farming, including deforestation. Similarly, the brand is seeking to reduce the use of residual products from animal production commonly used in the production of plastics, rubber, lubricants and adhesives.

In this way, Volvo is trying to take a strong and ethical stance to help end the harm done to animals by reducing demand for these materials containing animal products.
