The announcement has been made : the United States will indeed apply a 15% tariff on European wines and spirits, including champagne. The hope of an exemption, long held by champagne producers, has thus vanished.
Despite intense discussions over the summer, no compromise could be reached…
The US market, a strategic pillar
The United States is the leading export market for champagne in terms of value : in 2024, nearly 34 million bottles were shipped there, generating an estimated €820 million in revenue, representing around 10% of volume but 14% of the industry’s overall income.
For both large houses and independent winegrowers, this market is essential. A 15% tax risks slowing consumption, strengthening competition from other sparkling wines, and undermining the economic balance of a region where 600,000 direct and indirect jobs depend on vineyards and wine.
